Vera Meredith
100 ton USCG Licensed Boat Captain
Island Queen II
A fifth-generation captain, Vera follows the footsteps of her family in working the waters of her home. The Bay has been in Vera’s life since she was a child. She lived across the street from the dock and would always be out on the water with her father. A renowned captain who was honored by the governor, he taught her all about fishing in the Chesapeake. After a career for the state and in the school system, she transitioned to working the family fishing charter business with her brother. Sometimes she is the mate on the boat he captains, and in the busy season she captains a second boat for additional charters. Male clients are occasionally amazed to see a female mate and captain, and then they feel comfortable bringing their own wives and mothers for trips, enjoying the family atmosphere. One of Vera’s favorite times on the boat was when the Annapolis police department brought a group of children for a fishing trip. Seeing these children, some of whom had never been out before, smile as they caught their first fish was incredibly rewarding to Vera. Her son, when he was young, would proudly talk about his mother being a boat captain. Family is incredibly important to Vera, and her family is proud to support her.
