Judy Long Bixler

100-ton USCG Licensed Boat Captain
Oxford-Bellevue Ferry

A far cry from the mother who used to be nervous with her children on ski boats, Judy Bixler now owns and operates what is believed to be the oldest privately-owned ferry in the country, established in 1683. When she and her husband retired, they convinced the previous owners that they were up to the hefty task of this business. In or out of season, the amount of work that goes into running a ferry is constant and demanding. She has seen plenty of change in the years they’ve owned her - a shift from commuters to the tourism industry, and an increasing acceptance of female captains on the water. One of her proudest aspects as a ferry captain is the inspiration she provides to her young summer crew - including one girl who went on to earn her own captain’s license. The ferry has hosted many notable personalities, from artists to political VIPs to corporate CEOs, even getting a touch of Hollywood by featuring in multiple movies. After their 20 year anniversary of owning the ferry, the job still brings her joy, and she looks forward to many more fun seasons.
