Her years working on a fishing charter, both as a captain and as a mate, have been the highlight of Cindy’s life. It was an incredibly difficult journey, full of hard work and heartache. Previously in a non-maritime career, she spent many lunch breaks and vanpool trips and vacation days studying for her captain’s license. The day she passed was one of her happiest days. Since getting it in her head that she wanted to pursue this dream, she has worked towards that goal and created a space for herself. She recognizes and values the family and friends and other water-workers who made room for her, even when society wasn’t quite ready. Because of those supporters and because of Cindy herself, the saying, which was negative in the past, turns into “oh you’re a girl, you CAN do that” for girls in the future.
