Annie is an amazing representation of how girls can grow into confident women when given an encouraging environment in which to learn. Growing up, she was surrounded by boats and had close female relatives as role models on the water. She’s incredibly proud of her mother for starting a women’s sailing group in her hometown. All of her family was supportive of whatever role she wanted to fill. This all helped her earn her captain’s license at the age of 18. She is grateful for the opportunity to accomplish all she has, and recognizes that some of her success is due to the support she had. She is able to achieve amazing things partly because no one questioned whether she could. She uses that realization to instill confidence in others. As an adult, she has taught junior sailing and, even more enjoyable, taught sailing to groups of women. She enjoys both competing around the country, and cruising closer to home where she sometimes brings her favorite bull terrier companion, after whom her boat is named.
